UNICAL Bans Miniskirts and Crop Tops, Urges Emulation of VC
The University of Calabar (UNICAL) has implemented a new dress code for its students and staff as part of its efforts to curb indecent dressing on campus. The university’s director of SERVICOM, Prof. Patrick Egaga, released a statement containing the dress code.
According to the director, the prevalence of indecent and provocative clothing was primarily observed among female students and staff members at the institution.
The statement issued by the director of SERVICOM listed various types of clothing that are considered indecent, including short skirts or dresses that are above the knee, open-back clothing, crop tops, clothing without bras, sleeveless tops, strapless dresses, transparent clothing, and revealing outfits.
The statement further specified other clothing items that are also considered indecent, such as dresses without sleeves, shorts that reveal the thigh, skirts with slits, tight-fitting clothes, clothing with V-necklines that expose the chest, tube tops, ripped jeans, shorts above the knee, shirts without sleeves, tank tops, underwear, and sagging trousers, among others.
According to the statement, the new dress code will come into effect on Tuesday, May 2, 2023. Students and staff members who are found wearing any of the banned outfits will be denied access to university facilities or subjected to appropriate sanctions.
The university also advised female students and staff to dress in a manner similar to the Vice Chancellor and her deputies, while male students and staff were encouraged to emulate the dressing style of the university council chairman and the Registrar.
