Ummi’s three children, Teemah, Jamila, and Bint, were at home waiting for their father while their brother Omar was out. Ummi (their mom) was also outside the house. Inside the room, Teemah, Jamila, and Bint were engaged in a conversation that led to laughter.
Ummi was drawn to their conversation and attempted to listen in. She discovered that Bint, the youngest at 5 years old, was narrating an incident that occurred in her school to her siblings.
Bint was narrating to her sisters the story of what happened in her school when her Social Studies teacher (Mallam Salihu) asked the class how to say Good morning in French. After the class was silent, Bint answered that Good morning in French is Bonjour.
She then asked the teacher how to say very good in French, but the teacher could not answer. The French teacher was later called in to answer the question (C’est tres bien means very good in French), and Bint was admired by her classmates for asking a question the teacher couldn’t answer.
The conversation became animated when their mother entered the room, and they discussed the teacher’s decision to call in another teacher to answer the question rather than giving a wrong answer. Ummi suggested what if the teacher had told Bint that au revoir means very good, which actually means goodbye until we meet again in French.
In the midst of their conversation, Omar, the first son, came in and announced that he had been given admission to study Law at the Kongo Campus of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. Ummi was thrilled about Omar’s admission, especially because his father had always wanted to study Law but didn’t get the opportunity.
Ummi then told Omar that Admission is THE LIFE CHANGER, which was the inspiration for the title of the novel by Khadija Abubakar Jalli.

The Life Changer Summary – Chapter 4
